This physics textbook containing student exercises, laboratory activities, and other resources, is designed to serve students in two-year technical programs. College programs of study might be computer electronics, wind power technology, automotive technology, precision metals fabrication, or maybe computer aided drafting. All of these professions require an understanding of the fundamental concepts and conventions upon which technologies are applied, developed, controlled, and maintained. More than ever before, rapid changes in technologies are changing the way in which we live, and more and more is expected of our technicians who must adapt and evolve as technologies so quickly advance. Physics has traditionally been taught by treating technical topics as separate disciples, with chapters typically organized as two sequential four credit courses covering mechanics, heat, sound, wave motion, electricity, magnetism, and optics, usually in this order. But this traditional format has significant drawbacks. Important similarities between the various mechanical, fluid, electrical, and thermal systems are not directly addressed, lacking in any broad understanding of how all these disciplines are interrelated and analogous. Also, time spent on formula derivations and proofs is done at the expense of establishing a sense of how the various systems can interact and how they are used in the scientific, commercial, and industrial applications. To remedy these drawbacks, this textbook/lab manual/workbook utilizes the "systems approach", where unifying principles across energy systems is emphasized. Unifying principles are reinforced in twenty-six technology-based, hands-on laboratory activities. A student workbook of twenty-seven sets of student exercises, with answers, accompanies most sections and chapters. Subject matter is organized as follows: prerequisite review, displacement, rate, mover quantities (force, torque, pressure, voltage, and temperature difference), work and energy, and finally power. By examining the language, writing conventions, standards of measurement, and principles that are the underlying foundation of all technologies, this course is designed to help students gain what they need in order to read, write, compute, and speak tech, and thereby keep up with ever changing technologies. Ultimately, it is hoped students will acquire the tools technicians need in order to have a successful, long-term career in a variety of technology-related professions.
